Aged Parent visa (subclass 804)

Subclass 804: Aged Parent Visa

This permanent visa allows an aged parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia indefinitely.

Overview

  • Stay: Permanently
  • Cost: From AUD5,125
  • Processing Times: Due to high demand, processing can be lengthy. Use the visa processing time guide tool for an estimate. For details, see the Parent visa queue.

Benefits of this Visa

With the Subclass 804 visa, you can:

  • Live in Australia permanently
  • Sponsor eligible family members to join you
  • Apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible
  • Access Medicare, Australia’s public healthcare scheme
  • Travel freely in and out of Australia for the first five years after visa grant

After five years, you’ll need a Resident Return Visa (RRV) to continue re-entering Australia or consider applying for citizenship to travel without restriction.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this visa, you must:

  • Have a sponsor: An eligible child or, if your child is under 18, an approved relative or community organization
  • Meet the age requirement: Be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia
  • Pass the health and character checks: Applies to both migrating and some non-migrating family members
  • Meet the balance-of-family test: At least half of your children must be eligible children or reside permanently in Australia
  • Provide an assurance of support: A commitment that you won’t rely on government assistance
  • Be clear of debts: Any owed debt to the Australian Government must be settled

Additionally, you must not have previously applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa.

Including Family Members

You may include family members in your application, whether they are migrating or not. All applicants must meet health and character requirements, and details of non-migrating family members should also be included.

Application Costs

The Subclass 804 visa requires payment in two instalments:

  1. First instalment at application
  2. Second instalment upon request during processing

Additional fees may apply for health checks, police certificates, and biometrics. Use the Visa Pricing Estimator for an approximate cost but note it doesn’t include the second instalment.

Application Process

You and your family must be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, at the time of application. Due to limited availability each year, this visa is subject to capping and queueing.

Processing Time

Applications are assessed in two stages:

  1. Eligibility check: Determines if the application enters the queue or is refused
  2. Final assessment: Application is reviewed once a place becomes available

Avoid making permanent plans until your visa is granted.

Important Notes
