Child visa (subclass 101)

The Subclass 101 Child Visa allows a child who is outside of Australia to migrate to Australia and live with their parent(s). This permanent visa is designed for children who meet specific eligibility requirements and wish to join their parent(s) in Australia.

Visa Stay

This is a permanent visa, granting the child the right to stay in Australia indefinitely.

Visa Cost

The visa costs AUD 3,140.00 for the main applicant. Additional costs may apply for health examinations, police certificates, and biometrics.

Processing Time

With this Visa, the Child Can:

  • Migrate to Australia as a permanent resident
  • Study and access Medicare (Australia’s public healthcare system)
  • Apply for Australian citizenship if eligible
  • Work and study in Australia without restrictions
  • Sponsor relatives to migrate to Australia
  • Travel to and from Australia within the first 5 years (with a valid travel facility)

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the Subclass 101 Child Visa, the child must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a dependent child of a parent who is an Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen, or holder of an Australian permanent visa.
  • Be under 18 years old, or if aged 18 to 25, a full-time student and financially dependent on the parent.
  • Be single and financially dependent on the parent.
  • Be outside Australia when applying.

Adoption and Stepchildren:

  • Adopted children may be eligible if adopted before turning 18 by a parent who was not an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen at the time of adoption.
  • Stepchildren are eligible if they are the child of their step-parent’s former partner and meet specific requirements (e.g., custody orders).

What Happens After the First 5 Years:

After the initial 5-year travel facility, the child must apply for a Resident Return (RRV) visa to continue re-entering Australia as a permanent resident. Alternatively, the child may apply for Australian citizenship if eligible, allowing them to enter without a visa.

Family Members:

  • The child’s dependent children can be included in the application.
  • Other family members not coming to Australia may also need to meet health requirements.

Health and Character Requirements:

  • The child and their dependents must meet Australia’s health requirements.
  • Applicants aged 16 years or older must meet character requirements.

Australian Values Statement:

Children 18 years or older must:

  • Read or have explained the Life in Australia booklet.
  • Sign the Australian Values Statement, committing to obey Australian laws and respect the Australian way of life.

Child’s Best Interests:

The Australian government considers the best interests of the child when deciding whether to grant the visa. If there are concerns, the application may be denied.
