AMC Skills Assessment — Doctors

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) is the assessing authority for medical practitioners (doctors) for migration purposes. AMC assesses qualifications and conducts examinations that demonstrate readiness to practise at the level of an Australian medical graduate.

WIDEN does not assist with the AMC examinations, AHPRA registration, or specialist college pathways in any way. AMC verifies qualifications and examines. AHPRA (through the Medical Board of Australia) registers doctors to practise. Specialist colleges run their own pathways. All three processes are outside WIDEN's role. WIDEN's role is the migration side — visa subclass, points test, EOI strategy, sponsorship — that uses the AMC outcome.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AMC's role in migration?

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) is the assessing authority for medical practitioners (doctors) for migration purposes. AMC assesses overseas-trained doctors' medical qualifications and conducts examinations that demonstrate readiness to practise in Australia at the level of an Australian medical graduate. The Medical Board of Australia (through AHPRA) registers doctors to practise — separate from AMC's role.

What are the AMC pathways?

There are several pathways depending on your training and country of qualification: Standard Pathway — typically requires the AMC MCQ Examination and the AMC Clinical Examination, plus relevant training; Competent Authority Pathway — for doctors with qualifications and registration from recognised competent authorities (UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, US, and some others), with reduced examination requirements; Specialist Pathway — for already-specialised doctors seeking recognition by the relevant Australian specialist college. The right pathway depends on your country of qualification and specialty status.

What does the AMC examination involve?

The AMC MCQ Examination is a multiple-choice computer-administered exam covering the breadth of medical knowledge expected of an Australian medical graduate. The AMC Clinical Examination is a multi-station OSCE-style practical assessment. Both have specific eligibility requirements, fees, and limited annual sittings. Detailed exam content and current rules are published by AMC — verify directly.

How much do the AMC examinations cost?

AMC publishes current fees on its website. Examination fees run into the thousands of AUD per attempt, with separate fees for the MCQ and Clinical exams. Application and qualification verification carries additional fees. Verify current fees with AMC before paying.

How long does the full AMC process take?

From initial application through to passing both examinations and obtaining AHPRA registration, the AMC pathway typically takes months to several years depending on pathway, exam availability, results, and supervised practice requirements. Plan a realistic timeline that accounts for retakes, supervised practice, and AHPRA's separate processing.

Does AMC = AHPRA registration?

No. AMC verifies qualifications and conducts assessment examinations. AHPRA (through the Medical Board of Australia) registers doctors to practise. Successful AMC outcomes feed into the AHPRA registration application, but registration is a separate process with its own requirements (including English, identity, criminal history, and registration standards). You may also need supervised practice before being granted general registration.

What about specialists already qualified overseas?

The Specialist Pathway routes the assessment through the relevant Australian specialist medical college (RACS, RACP, RACGP, ACEM, etc.) rather than the AMC examination pathway. The college assesses your specialist training and qualifications and recommends one of: substantially comparable, partially comparable, or not substantially comparable. Bridging requirements may apply. The college pathway is materially different from the standard AMC pathway.

Fields marked * are required. WIDEN does not assist with the AMC skills assessment in any way — the application, evidence preparation, and outcome are entirely AMC's domain. WIDEN provides migration advice (visa subclass strategy, points test, EOI, occupation list) — separate from the skills assessment process.
