What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
A guide to the RPL pathway in Australia
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that allows people with substantial work experience to receive a nationally recognised Australian qualification without completing classroom study. It is recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).
How RPL works
Instead of attending classes, an RPL candidate provides evidence of their existing skills and knowledge. A qualified assessor working for an RTO reviews this evidence against the competency standards of a specific qualification. If the evidence is sufficient, the RTO issues the qualification.
Typical evidence includes:
- Employment references and contracts showing relevant work history
- Position descriptions and performance reviews
- Photos or videos of the candidate performing the work
- Examples of work products (reports, schedules, plans, completed forms)
- Prior training certificates and short course records
- Statements from supervisors or clients
- Translated documents where applicable
Who RPL is suitable for
RPL is best suited to people who have:
- Several years of paid or unpaid work experience in the relevant field
- Documented evidence of that experience
- Capacity to participate in a competency conversation with an assessor if asked
RPL is not a shortcut for people without genuine experience. Assessors apply the same competency standards used in classroom-delivered qualifications.
Industries where RPL is commonly used
RPL is widely used in industries where workers gain skills on the job over many years. Common areas include:
- Aged care, disability support, and community services
- Hospitality and commercial cookery
- Information technology
- Early childhood education and care
- Leadership and management
- Building and construction trades
Why people pursue RPL
The most common reasons are:
- Career progression — many employers require formal qualifications for promotion
- Higher pay rates — qualified workers may be eligible for higher rates under industry awards
- Regulatory compliance — some industries have tightened qualification requirements
- Professional recognition — a qualification documents existing skills
The RPL process
- Initial assessment — a discussion about whether RPL is suitable for your background
- Evidence collection — gathering supporting documents and materials
- Assessment by the RTO — review of evidence against the qualification's competency standards
- Competency conversation — if needed, a conversation with an assessor to clarify or supplement the evidence
- Outcome — qualification issued, additional evidence requested, or partial recognition with gap training identified
Verifying an RTO
All RTOs in Australia are regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), or in Western Australia by the Training Accreditation Council. Before engaging with an RTO for RPL, candidates can verify the RTO's registration and current scope at training.gov.au, the national VET register.
Common questions
How long does RPL take? Timeframes vary widely depending on the qualification, the volume of evidence, and the RTO's processes. Some RPL applications conclude in a few weeks; others take several months.
What does it cost? Costs vary by qualification and RTO. Candidates should always request a written quote before committing.
Is the qualification the same as classroom-delivered? Yes. A qualification issued via RPL is identical to one issued through classroom study. The certificate does not indicate the assessment pathway.
Can I do RPL while overseas? Most RPL is designed for candidates already in Australia with Australian work experience. Some RTOs assess overseas experience, but this is less common.
