Recognition of Prior Learning — pathway guidance

How WIDEN supports RPL within a migration strategy

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that allows people with substantial work experience to obtain a nationally recognised Australian qualification without completing classroom study. RPL is delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority. For some migration matters, an RPL qualification is part of a viable visa or skills-assessment pathway.

This page sets out what WIDEN does — and does not do — in the RPL space. The short version: WIDEN provides migration advice and coordinates referrals to RTOs. WIDEN is not an RTO and does not conduct RPL assessments. Assessment and certification are the responsibility of the RTO.

How WIDEN supports the RPL pathway

Within a migration strategy, RPL can be the right move when an applicant has substantial work experience but no formal Australian qualification, and the visa or skills-assessment pathway requires one. WIDEN's role is:

What WIDEN does not do

All RPL assessment work is conducted by a Registered Training Organisation regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (or, in Western Australia, the Training Accreditation Council). The qualification is issued by the RTO.

How RPL works (general overview)

An RPL candidate provides evidence of existing skills and knowledge. A qualified assessor working for an RTO reviews this evidence against the competency standards of a specific qualification. If the evidence is sufficient, the RTO issues the qualification.

Typical evidence includes:

When RPL fits into a migration pathway

Common scenarios where RPL is part of the right strategy include:

Whether RPL is appropriate for your situation can only be assessed individually, in the context of your full migration matter.

Verifying an RTO

All RTOs in Australia are regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), or in Western Australia by the Training Accreditation Council. RTO registration and current scope of registration are publicly verifiable at training.gov.au, the national VET register.

Frequently asked questions

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Recognition of Prior Learning is an assessment process that allows people with substantial work experience to receive a nationally recognised Australian qualification without completing classroom study. The qualification is issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

Does WIDEN issue RPL qualifications?

No. RPL assessments are conducted by Registered Training Organisations. WIDEN is a migration practice, not an RTO. Our role is to advise on whether RPL is part of a viable visa or skills assessment pathway for your specific circumstances and to coordinate referrals to RTOs that conduct RPL assessments.

How does the RPL pathway connect to migration?

An RPL qualification can support a positive skills assessment for certain occupations and skilled visa pathways. Where RPL is part of the right strategy for your visa goal, WIDEN provides the migration advice and coordinates the referral. The RTO then conducts the assessment and issues the qualification.

Who do I pay for what?

RPL assessment fees are paid by the applicant directly to the RTO conducting the assessment. WIDEN charges separately for migration advice (initial consultation $200 + GST) and for ongoing migration services under a written service agreement.

How long does the RPL pathway take?

Timeframes vary widely depending on the qualification, the volume of evidence, and the RTO's processes. Some applications conclude in a few weeks; others take several months. The migration step that the RPL supports has its own timeline.
