Western Australia State Nomination — 190 & 491
Skilled Migration WA operates Western Australia's nomination program for the Subclass 190 and Subclass 491. WA publishes its own Skilled Migration Occupation List (WASMOL) — being on the Department's combined list is not sufficient if your occupation is not on the current WASMOL.
MARN 1576536
WIDEN does not issue WA nominations. Skilled Migration WA does, on its own published criteria. Outcomes cannot be guaranteed (s 15). WIDEN's role is the migration pathway — visa subclass, points strategy, EOI lodgement, and integration with the broader visa application.
WA Skilled Migration Occupation List (WASMOL)
WA publishes its own occupation list — typically split into schedules with different criteria (such as general skilled occupations and graduate-eligible occupations). Verify your occupation is on the current WASMOL before lodging an EOI selecting WA. Occupations on the Department's combined list but not on the WASMOL cannot be nominated by WA.
Streams (high level)
- General Stream — for applicants with a positive skills assessment in a WASMOL occupation, meeting points and English requirements.
- Graduate Stream — for graduates of eligible WA institutions in qualifying courses.
- Priority industry pathways — WA has periodically opened specific pathways for priority sectors (such as health) with different criteria.
Typical criteria framework
- EOI lodged in SkillSelect, ticking WA as nominating state
- Positive skills assessment in a current WASMOL occupation
- Demonstrated commitment and connection to Western Australia
- Minimum points appropriate to your occupation and stream
- English at the level required by the visa subclass
- For 491: settlement in regional WA
Frequently asked questions
Who runs WA's state nomination?
Skilled Migration WA (part of the Western Australian Government, Department of Training and Workforce Development) operates Western Australia's skilled migration nomination for the Subclass 190 and Subclass 491. WA publishes its current streams, occupation list, and criteria on its skilled migration website.
What's the WA Skilled Migration Occupation List?
WA publishes its own Skilled Migration Occupation List (WASMOL) — a list of occupations WA is currently nominating, often differentiated into schedules with different criteria. The WASMOL is more restrictive than the Department's combined list — being on the Department's list does not guarantee WA will nominate. Verify your occupation is on the current WASMOL before selecting WA in your EOI.
What streams does WA operate?
WA has historically run a General Stream (for applicants meeting standard skills and English criteria), a Graduate Stream (for graduates of WA institutions in eligible courses), and various priority pathways for specific industries (such as health). Stream openings and eligibility change — verify with WA before lodging.
Do I need to live in WA?
Most WA streams require or strongly favour current connection to WA — through employment in WA in your nominated occupation, qualifying WA study, or specific industry priority. WA assesses commitment to settle long-term in Western Australia as part of the nomination review. Confirm the connection requirement for your target stream directly with WA.
What does WA nomination cost?
WA publishes its current nomination fee on its skilled migration website (subject to change). The Department of Home Affairs visa application charge for the 190 / 491 is separate. Verify both before applying.
Is WA easier than NSW or VIC?
Different — not easier or harder in a simple sense. WA's WASMOL is more restrictive on which occupations it nominates, but for occupations on the list WA can be more accessible to applicants with genuine WA connection. Each state's program rewards different applicant profiles. Choose the state that matches your occupation, connection, and target timeline.
