RPL for Business and Management: Diploma and Advanced Diploma from Experience

By Keshab Chapagain · Published 2026-06-12

People who have managed teams, run operations, or owned a business often carry exactly the competencies a management qualification certifies — just without the certificate. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can assess that experience toward a Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Business, Leadership and Management (and related business qualifications).

What an RTO can recognise

A Registered Training Organisation (RTO), regulated by ASQA, assesses your demonstrated competence against the units of the qualification — leading teams, managing operations and budgets, workplace policy, risk, and stakeholder relationships — and recognises what your genuine evidence supports.

This recognises real management experience. It is not a way to obtain a business qualification for someone who has not done the work. Assessors look for evidence of genuine responsibility and outcomes.

Evidence for business and management RPL

  • Organisation charts or role descriptions showing your level of responsibility
  • Evidence of work you led — plans, budgets, reports, policies, projects (commercially sensitive details can be redacted)
  • Employment references or a director’s statutory declaration confirming your role and duration; for business owners, registration and trading records
  • Prior qualifications or training
  • A competency conversation with the assessor

How it fits a migration pathway

  • Skills assessment. Management and professional occupations are commonly assessed by VETASSESS, which has its own qualification and employment-history requirements by occupation. A qualification can support an assessment but does not replace VETASSESS’s criteria.
  • The visa. A skills assessment is one element of a skilled or sponsored visa — it does not on its own grant a visa, and points-tested visas depend on your full profile.

A qualification does not guarantee a skills assessment, and a skills assessment does not guarantee a visa.

How WIDEN fits in

WIDEN is a migration practice (MARN 1576536), not an RTO. We do not assess experience or issue qualifications — RTOs do. We advise on whether a business or management qualification genuinely helps your specific skills-assessment and visa pathway, confirm the correct occupation and assessing authority, and refer you to vetted RTOs for the RPL assessment.

If RPL is not the right move for your profile, we will say so.

This article is general information, not migration advice for your individual circumstances. For advice on your skilled pathway, contact WIDEN.

Common questions

What business qualification can I get through RPL?

Commonly a Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Business, or of Leadership and Management, assessed by an RTO against evidence of your genuine management experience.

Which authority assesses management occupations?

Management and professional occupations are commonly assessed by VETASSESS, which has its own qualification and employment-history requirements by occupation.

Does the qualification guarantee migration points or a visa?

No. A qualification can support a skills assessment, but points-tested visas depend on your full profile and a visa is a separate decision by the Department of Home Affairs.
