How Much Does RPL Cost in Australia? Fees, Timeframes and What Drives the Price

By Keshab Chapagain · Published 2026-06-12

“How much does RPL cost?” is the first question most people ask — and the honest answer is it depends on the qualification and how complete your evidence is. This guide gives realistic ranges, what drives the price, and a warning about the cheapest offers.

Typical fee ranges

Recognition of Prior Learning fees are set by each Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and paid by you directly to the RTO. As a broad guide:

  • A single Certificate III — commonly a few hundred to around a thousand dollars
  • Certificate IV or Diploma — typically higher, often one to a few thousand dollars
  • Multi-qualification packages — priced per the qualifications included

These are general ranges only — always get a written quote from the RTO for your specific qualification.

What drives the price

  • The level and number of qualifications — a Diploma involves more units than a Certificate III
  • How complete your evidence is — strong, organised evidence is quicker to assess; gaps may require additional assessment or gap training (at extra cost)
  • Whether any gap training is needed — in regulated fields like early childhood or care, RPL often pairs with some training
  • Practical assessment requirements — some trades require a practical demonstration

How long it takes

Most RPL runs from a few weeks to a couple of months, driven mainly by how quickly you can assemble your evidence. The assessment itself is rarely the bottleneck — gathering references, records and photos usually is.

A warning about the cheapest offers

If a provider offers a qualification for a suspiciously low price “with no real evidence needed”, treat it as a red flag. Qualifications obtained without genuine assessment are exactly what the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) — and, in migration cases, the Department of Home Affairs — investigate. A cheap qualification that does not survive scrutiny can do far more damage to a visa application than not having one at all. The right RTO charges a fair fee to assess your real skills properly.

How WIDEN fits in

WIDEN is a migration practice (MARN 1576536), not an RTO — we do not set RPL fees or conduct assessments. Where RPL genuinely helps a migration pathway, we advise on whether it is worth doing for your occupation and goal, and refer you to vetted RTOs who assess against real evidence and quote transparently. RPL fees are paid by you directly to the RTO.

This article is general information, not migration advice for your individual circumstances. For advice on your situation, contact WIDEN.

Common questions

How much does RPL cost in Australia?

Fees are set by each RTO and vary by qualification. As a broad guide, a single Certificate III is commonly a few hundred to around a thousand dollars, while a Certificate IV or Diploma is typically higher. Always get a written quote for your qualification.

How long does RPL take?

Most RPL runs from a few weeks to a couple of months, driven mainly by how quickly you can assemble your evidence.

Why are some RPL offers so cheap?

Be cautious. Qualifications offered with no real evidence are exactly what ASQA and the Department of Home Affairs investigate, and a qualification that does not survive scrutiny can harm a visa application more than not having one.
